Recommended by Jeff in Technical Services… Jeff’s synopsis: This is a graphic novel based on a shooting on Chicago’s South-side that ended up with a 14 year girl named Shavon Dean being killed by an 11 year old named Robert Sandifer. Everyone called him Yummy because he liked to eat a lot of sweets, like candy bars. He was a kid growing up in a grown-up’s world. He was involved in gangs, stealing and robbery like someone much older but he also had a teddy bear and liked to watch tv just like a kid. He says: This is a very powerful book that questions whether a kid is still a kid when he decides to become a thug or was he also victim of his environment. The illustrations are very good using a lot of difference between light and dark when they show the differences in the character and situations. I also liked that that it does not glamorize gang life or the violence while telling this sad story about two kids who will never have a chance to grow...
