John Waters fondly remembers how common hitchhiking was when he was a boy and wonders what would happen if he were to hitchhike from his home in Baltimore to his apartment in San Francisco. Waters writes three novellas. The first two are fictional accounts. One being the best scenario he can imagine and the second being the worst scenario. Finally the third novella is the actual account of his hitchhiking journey.
The first novella is a dud as there is almost no drama in a story where nothing goes wrong and everything goes right but keep on reading because that doesn’t hold true for the second story where everything goes wrong. The second novella is hilarious and is a great segue into the true and equally great final novella of John Waters’s real coast-to-coast journey.
