Despite the “thys” and “thous” that are sprinkled throughout the dialogue, this book is immensely readable, and the fast-moving plot quickly draws you in. The characters are not as compelling as those in “Girl with a pearl earring,” Chevalier’s earlier bestseller, but their situations and the historical context offer enough drama to keep your attention till the end.
