The book opens with the rape and murder of teenager Susie Salmon. The story quickly moves to heaven, from where Susie begins to observe the lives of family and friends. Her presence permeates life on earth as Susie’s father seeks out her murderer; her mother becomes detached; her sister shuts down emotionally; and her brother, a tender 4 years old, gleans the meaning of death. All the while, Susie watches her murderer moving on under the radar, helpless at bringing him to justice.
Sebold doesn’t waste any time tugging at your heartstrings. Right off the bat, we are pulled into the emotional roller-coaster that is left in the aftermath of Susie’s death. The book is a quick read, mainly because you feel so attached to the characters, and are eager to learn what their outcomes are. You can look forward to a film adaptation due out this December, starring Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz.
