The Dogs of Babel by Carolyn Parkhurst
Recommended by Jeff in Technical Services...

Jeffs's synopsis:
Paul's wife dies either by accident or suicide and the only witness is their pet dog. Paul, a linguist, attempts to teach his dog to speak in order to find out the truth about his wife's death.

He says:
The author does a great job of bringing us inside the character of Paul.  Is he just losing his mind with grief after the death of his wife, or is he really learning how to communicate with his dog?  At heart, this is a classic, tragic love story about life and loss.

Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris
Recommended by Jackie in Youth Services...

Jackies's synopsis:
The novel takes a look at a group of co-workers at a struggling Chicago advertising agency.  Office gossip, trashy affairs, and chair-stealing are the norm.

She says:
A painfully relatable (but ridiculously funny) read if you've ever worked someplace you didn't like.

Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear
Recommended by Nancy in Reader Services...

Nancy's synopsis:
This novel begins the Maisie Dobbs series.  Formerly a nurse in France, she sets up shop as a private investigator in England between World War I and World War II.  In her first case, Maisie Dobbs looks for a disappearing wife, and in the process runs across a mysterious retreat for soldiers who fought in the Great War.

She says:
This novel has something for everyone...a little mystery, a little history, and a little romance.  It really gives you a feel for what it was like to live in England between the wars.  Birds of a Feather is the next title in the series.

Post WWII story of a young London writer who corresponds with the members of a book club on the Channel Island of Guernsey.  The book is written as a series of letters between Juliet Aston and her editor and friends.

The book is very warm and witty.  The characters are all wonderfully quirky.  It is a predicatble, but fun book to read.

Izabela's synopsis:

A must read!  Style and subject is captivating from the first page.
