Follow the River by James Alexander Thom
Recommended by Colleen in Outreach Services

Colleen's synopsis:
This novel is based on the true story of Mary Ingles who is taken, along with her children, by a band of Indians.  It is the unbelievable story of determination, and the will to survive.

She says:
I found this book to be fascinating -- the main characters overcame great adversity to return to their families.  I really enjoy historical fiction and think this book is a good read.

Naked by David Sedaris (audio version)
Recommended by Jeff in Technical Services...

Jeff's synopsis:
Naked is a selection of readings based on the author's early life. "The Drama Bug" is a hilarious tale of what happens in high school after David is introduced to Shakespeare by a visiting actor and starts to speak Elizabethan English.  He does so on every occasion from cleaning the house to eating dinner.  "Methinks, kind sir, most gentle lady, fellow siblings all, that this barnyard fowl be most tasty and succulent..."

He says:
I never laugh out loud, but "The Drama Bug" had me laughing so much I had to stop the car. Not recommended to listen to while driving.

Escape by Carolyn Jessop
Recommended by Beth in Youth Services...

Beth's synopis:
Read one woman's harrowing story of abuse and daring escape from the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints (FLDS).

She says:
This was a very compelling survival story that you won't be able to put down.  It is also very timely with the recent developments regarding the FLDS in Texas.

Innocent Traitor by Alison Weir
Recommended by Mona in Circulation Services...

Mona's synopis:
Historical fiction of the life of Lady Jane Grey, who reigned England for nine days.

She says:
I was delighted to find a book written about a figure in history that not much is known about, but around her hinged so much intrigue, religion, and politics.  I read half of it in one night!

Peace Like a River by Leif Enger
Recommended by Asra in Adult Services...

Asra's synopsis:
Eleven year-old Rube, with kid sister Swede, and a saint-of-a-father Jeremiah are searching for eldest son Davy, who is running from the law - he defended their home late one night (with a bit too much enthusiasm) against two school boys who had nothing but harm in mind for the family.

She says:
I absolutely loved the writing - got lost in it.  All of the characters come alive on the page.  Though the story takes place in modern times, the idyllic setting and lifestyle seems to transport you to the "good ole days."  The story also has mysterious aspects to it, as Jeremiah is a saintly figure.
