Library Card Art Contest

Calling all young artists! September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month, and the Itasca Community Library would like to celebrate by featuring your artwork on our library cards. Children of preschool age (at least 3 years old) through 12th grade who live in Itasca are eligible to participate. One winning design from each of the following categories will be featured on the library cards: 2nd grade and younger, 3rd-5th grade, and 6th-12th grade. Entry forms and more information about this exciting contest are available at the Circulation Desk or Youth Help Desk at the library.

New Video Game Collection

Check out our new video game collection in the Youth Services Department! The collection contains games for the Wii, Xbox, Playstation, and Nintendo DS systems. Two games may be checked out per library card, and the loan period is one week. Video games are available to Itasca cardholders only and may not be renewed. If you have any video game donations to add to the collection or suggestions for new titles to purchase, please speak with a Youth Services Librarian.

Lauryn Martin and Emma van den Bogert are the winners of the July How Many Bugs in the Jar Quiz for kids. Both winners correctly guessed that there were 91 bugs in the jar in this quiz that was featured in the Youth Department throughout the month of July. Lauren Balogh was the winner of the Spooky Movie Unscramble Quiz for teens.

171 kids and teens in total participated in the July quizzes.

National Night Out

In conjunction with the Village of Itasca’s celebration of National Night Out, the library will sponsor the following activities on Tuesday, August 3:

Water Balloon Burst (West parking lot) at 5:00-6:30 p.m.
Take your best shot and try to “dunk” community officials! Throw a ball at the target in order to pop a water balloon over the head of officials from the police department, fire department, village hall, School District 10, and the library.

All ages are invited to come play BINGO in the library’s West Meeting Room. It’s completely free and winners can choose books from our prize table. (Books include advance copies that we have received and donated items still in good shape.) No registration is required.

Grossology

In conjunction with Health World, the library presents the following Grossology events for children based on the books by Sylvia Branzei:

Check out the Grossology presentation at the Itasca Fest on Saturday, July 10 at 12:00-2:00 p.m.
An interactive Grossology exhibit from Health World will be set up in the youth department on Monday, July 12 through Friday, July 23.
Get your picture taken with Barf Man on Thursday, July 15 at 3:30-4:15 p.m. *Please bring your own cameras.

No registration is required for the above events. Please call the Youth Department if you have any questions.

Scare Up a Good Book!

Join one of our Scare Up a Good Book! Summer Reading Clubs in the Youth Department. Participants just need to read books in order to earn prizes. To join, register for the club at the library’s Circulation Desk starting Monday, May 24. Prize pick-up begins Monday, June 7. A valid library card is required in order to participate.

Youth Clubs

Birth – Age 2

Finish all of the early literacy activities in our new Mini Monsters Club and receive a board book for your baby or toddler.

Age 3 – Entering 1^st Grade

Prize Level 1: Read or Listen to 10 books – Monster sticker & necklace and assorted coupons

Prize Level 2: Read or Listen to 20 books – Monster beach ball, wacky bendable monster and assorted coupons

Prize Level 3+: For every additional 10 books read or listened to – earn chance at prize drawing

Entering Grades 2 – 4

Prize Level 1: Read 8 books – Monster tattoo, pencil and assorted coupons

Prize Level 2: Read 16 books – Monster beach ball, wind-up chomping teeth, and assorted coupons

Book-A-Trip Travel Kits

Going on a fun vacation this summer? Pick up an application for a travel kit at the library today!

The Youth Services Department will put together a travel packet for your child containing activity sheets and reading materials based on your child’s reading interests and vacation location. This service is for Itasca card holders only and requires at least two weeks notice. For more information or to fill out a Book-A-Trip travel kit form, stop by the Youth Help Desk.
