What is Addiction?

“WHAT IS ADDICTION?”
Interactive Exhibit
May 12 – June 9

The Village of Itasca, Itasca Police Department, Itasca Community Library and Health World are working cooperatively to showcase the “What is Addiction?” exhibit at the Itasca Community Library May 12, 2010 through June 9, 2010. This exhibit was donated in 2009 by Health World.

“What Is Addiction?” introduces visitors to the subject of addiction through multi-sensory interactive experiences, interpretive text and graphics, and video and computer-based media. Much of the exhibition explores the way the brain works, and how it changes, in relation to addiction. Young teens and their families are the target audience.

“After having seen the displays along with their content, it became very apparent to me that the relevancy to middle school children (adolescents) is profound,” stated F.E. Peacock Middle School Principal Nickisch. Principal Nickisch went on to state, “I believe that the Health World display will serve a much needed purpose of education and enlightenment that undoubtedly will benefit all citizens of Itasca.”

Health World was originally one of only five museums across the United States to receive the What is Addiction? Exhibit which was sponsored by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and federal partner, National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA). This incredible resource shares real life information from recovering teen addicts to create a powerful experience students, and adults alike, will not soon forget.

Itasca is not immune to these issues, whether addictions are related to alcohol, drugs, eating, shopping, hording; the ramifications can be detrimental to individuals, friends and families.  The library will be accepting testimonials from individuals who have struggled or watched someone struggle with addiction. The testimonials will be kept anonymous and will be displayed with the “What is Addiction?” exhibit with the purpose of illustrating that there is a common thread that connects so many of us – you are not alone. Testimonials can be dropped off in confidence at the library or submitted anonymously in the form below.
