American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang

This is like three books for the price of one. The first story is a legend featuring the Monkey King. The second is about a boy whose family moves from Chinatown to a mostly white suburb, and his struggles to fit in and deal with their stereotypes of him because of his background. The third story features an American boy who has a Chinese cousin who comes to visit every year. The boy is often embarrassed by his cousin’s behavior and appearance.

This is a great graphic novel, nicely illustrated, and addresses the issues of racial stereotypes, both positive and negative. I especially enjoyed the story of the Monkey King which reminded me of a folktale. I’m happy that we have the author’s latest book Boxers and Saints , and look forward to reading it.
